How do I find my iPhone using the Find My app?

If you lost your iPhone or think it might be stolen, you can use the Find My app on another device to help find the missing device and/or protect your information.

Set up Find My app

  1. If the Find My app is not installed, install the Find My app from the App Store.
    • An Apple ID and iCloud account must be created to use the Find My app.
  2. From the Home screen tap Settings > [your name] > Find My iPhone
    • Slide to turn on Find my iPhone and Send Last Location

NOTE: The Find My app must already be enabled on the missing/stolen device in order to use the below features. Each device must be set up with the same iCloud account in order to see all devices in the Find My app.

Locate Device

  1. See locations of online iOS devices on a map.  Open Find My app.
  2. Enter the Apple ID and password, then tap Sign In
  3. If prompted, tap Allow.
  4. In the Devices list, you will see the device status under each device.
  5. Tap the missing/stolen device. 
    • If the device is online: The location of the device will display on the map so you can see where it is.
    • If the device is not online: You will see ‘No location found’ under device name.  Under Notifications, turn on Notify When Found.  You will receive a notification once it’s located.

Play Sound
If a missing iOS device is nearby & online, you can play a sound on it to assist with finding it.

  1. From a Home screen, tap Find My app.
  2. Enter the Apple ID and password, then tap Sign In.
  3. If prompted, tap Allow.
  4. Tap the missing/stolen device.
  5. Tap Play Sound
    • When you find your device and want to
      • Turn off the sound before the two minutes is over press the power button or a volume button or flip the Ring/Silent switch.
      • Unlock the device if it is locked, swipe to dismiss the Find My Device alert
    • If the device is online: A sound will play after a short delay and gradually increases in volume for two minutes, the device vibrates (if applicable), and a Find My Device alert also appears on the missing iOS device if it is online and connected to internet.  A confirmation email is also sent to your Apple ID email address.
    • If the device is offline: You will see Pending under Play Sound.  The sound plays the next time it connects to a Wi-Fi or cellular network

Lost Mode
Securely lock an online iOS device and display a custom message along with your contact number. The finder of the device will see the custom message and be able to call the contact number.

  1. From a Home screen, tap Find My.
  2. Enter the Apple ID and password, then tap Sign In.
  3. If prompted, tap Allow.
  4. Tap the missing device.
  5. Under Mark as Lost, tap Activate.
  6. Follow the onscreen instructions, keeping the following in mind:
    • Passcode: If your iPhone doesn’t have a passcode, you’re asked to create one now.  This passcode is distinct from your password and is only used when you mark your device as lost.
    • Contact Information: If you’re asked to enter a mobile number, enter a number where you can be reached.  If you’re asked to enter a message, you may want to indicate that the device is lost or how to contact you.  The number and message appear on the device’s lock screen.
  7. Tap Activate.
  8. When you find your lost device, do either of the following to turn off Lost Mode:
    • Enter your passcode
    • In Find My iPhone, tap the device, tap Pending or Activated under Mark as Lost, tap Turn Off Mark as Lost, then tap Turn off.

Erase iPhone
If the online iOS device is lost or stolen it can be remotely erased, removing the personal info (i.e., contacts, email, pictures, etc.) and settings to prevent anyone from seeing or using the info.

  1. From a Home screen, tap Find My.
  2. Enter the Apple ID and password, then tap Sign In.
  3. If prompted, tap Allow.
  4. Tap the missing device.
  5. Tap Erase This Device.
  6. Review the warning, then tap Erase This Device.
  7. Enter the Apple ID and password, then tap Erase.
    • Note:  All personal info and settings are erased from the missing iOS device and cannot be restored.

Remove iPhone
If an iOS device is no longer being used, it can be removed from the Find My iPhone devices list.

  1. From a Home screen, tap Find My.
  2. Enter the Apple ID and password, then tap Sign In.
  3. If prompted, tap Allow.
  4. In the device list, tap the device you want to remove.
  5. Erase the device. (see above for details)
  6. When your device is erased, tap Remove This Device, then tap Remove.
    • All your content is erased, Activation Lock is turned off, and someone else can now activate the device.
