New 457 Area Code in Louisiana

Louisiana's population is growing quickly, impacting everything down through area codes. The 318 area code is about to run out of phone numbers, and so the Louisiana Public Service Commission is rolling out a new area code, 457, by the end of 2025.

What is an area code overlay?

An area code overlay is when a new area code (457) becomes available in a region already served by another area code (318). This usually happens when the local Public Service Commission estimates that the phone number supply is too low and in danger of running out.

Who's affected by this area code overlay?

Starting in September 2025, a new area code—457—will be available alongside 318. That means if you're getting a new number, you might have a 457 area code instead of 318. This update affects northern Louisiana, including cities like Alexandria, Bossier City, Monroe, Ruston, and Shreveport, plus lots of smaller communities.

I've heard rumor there me a new dialing procedure - what's going on?

Starting now, you'll need to dial all 10 digits—area code plus the seven-digit phone number—whenever you make a call, whether it’s local or long-distance. It’s a small change, but it’ll help keep everything running smoothly.

When will the change begin?

Starting August 25, 2025, you'll need to dial the full 10-digit number—area code plus the phone number—for all calls, even local ones. If you forget, the call won’t go through, so it's a good idea to get into the habit now!

Then, beginning September 25, 2025, new phone numbers may come with the 457 area code instead of 318.

What will stay the same after the overlay?

  • No change: your current telephone number and area code
  • No change: the cost to make a phone call
  • No change: what is considered a "local call," even with the new area code
  • No change: Three digits will still connect you to 911 and 988, as well as 211, 311, 411, 511, 611, 711, or 811 (if available in your area)
