New 483 Area Code in Alabama

Alabama’s population is growing rapidly, and it’s putting pressure on the state’s numbering system. The 334 area code is projected to run out of available phone numbers, so the Alabama Public Service Commission is introducing a new area code, 483, in 2026.

What is an area code overlay?

An area code overlay occurs when a new code (in this case, 483) is assigned to the same geographic region that already uses 334. Alabama’s Public Service Commission implements overlays like this when forecasts show that the existing area code is close to running out of available numbers.

Who's affected by this area code overlay?

Beginning in 2026, Alabama will introduce a new area code (483) to be used alongside the existing 334. Anyone getting a new phone number in the region could receive the 483 code moving forward. This change affects the southeastern and central parts of the state, including major cities such as Montgomery, Dothan, Auburn, and Selma, along with many surrounding communities.

Someone mentioned the dialing rules are changing. What’s actually happening?

From here on out, every call will require all 10 digits: the area code plus the regular phone number. Even local calls won’t go through with seven digits anymore. It’s a simple shift, but it ensures the phone network can support the new area code and avoid confusion.

When will the change take place?

Starting on January 23, 2026, you will need to dial all 10 digits to make a call.

Beginning February 23, 2026, new phone numbers in the area will receive the 483 area code.

What isn’t changing with the new overlay?

Even with the addition of a new area code, several things will stay exactly as they are:

  • Your phone number remains the same. No one will be forced to switch area codes.

  • Call pricing isn’t affected. Local and long-distance rates stay as they are today.

  • Local calling areas won’t change. A call that counts as ‘local’ now will still be local after the overlay.

  • All three-digit services continue to work normally. You’ll still reach 911, 988, and other quick-dial codes like 211, 311, 411, 511, 611, 711, and 811 (where available).
