Disable apps running in the background

Many apps, including navigation and music apps, may not only be constantly searching for new content and therefore consuming your data but also your battery life without you even knowing it. Check your settings and disable these apps from running in the background. You can always turn them back on manually when you’re on WiFi.

Apple

1. Open the Settings app
2. Tap General
3. Then tap Background App Refresh and toggle from On to Off

Apps may also be disabled individually

Samsung

1. Open the Settings app
2. Tap Connections and select Data Usage
3. Toggle background data usage off

Note: You need to do this for each app.

Motorola

1. Open the Settings app
2. Go to Network & Internet and Mobile Networks
3. Go to the app’s data usage
4. Toggle Background data off

Note: You need to do this for each app.

Connect to WiFi wherever, whenever you can

Many public restaurants, cafes, hotels, shopping centers, airports, and airlines offer WiFi guest access. When selecting a public WiFi network, you can expect to be directed to a portal with instructions on how to connect or given a URL to download and install a WiFi profile. Make sure to connect to the exact SSID provided by the third party on its official website to avoid similar SSIDs that could be impersonating a network to attack or hack users. Public WiFi networks are generally open to anyone to sign up and join, while private WiFi networks would require direct permission from an individual or company to sign on, just like you would request of a friend. To connect to a WiFi network other than your own in most cases:

Apple

1. Open the Settings app
2. Select Wi-Fi
3. Tap the network you want to join
4. Enter the password
5. Tap Join

Samsung

1. Open the Settings app
2. Select Connections, followed by Wi-Fi
3. Tap the network you want to join
4. Enter the password

Motorola

1. Open the Settings app
2. Select Connections, followed by Wi-Fi
3. Tap the network you want to join
4. Enter the password
